Awesome!
I just have to be sure; Was any megaman art referenced in the process of creating these?
What do you mean by referenced?
I've seen megaman art. But this lass is all new pixels. Inspired by megaman, obviously (though could also say inspired by Astro Boy). Tribute to megaman, obviously.
Here's some earlier WIPs:
huzzah!
By "referenced" I do not mean "I've seen it before". I mean did you actively go back and refer to other artwork to compare details between it and your work in any way.
Sounds like you didn't.
Thanks.
Was the hairstyle inspired by Megaman Zero/ZX?
@Umplix It's kinda the other way around. She is very inspired by Zero, but the hairstyle is basically the same as Space Sara, just drawn in a slightly different way. The hair is the reason why I thought of Zero when drawing her.
Love it, looking forward to climbing some walls!
Awesome stuff as always!
This looks great! Really nails that sort of Mega Man X style.
Here's your wall-hanging frame. OGA-BY 3+.
I hope for her to eventually have a full wall-climbing cycle so that she can crawl up walls properly like Strider or Zool, instead of bunny-hopping awkwardly up them like Megaman.
Thanks, appreciate the update! As an aside, I'm also finding this super useful as a study.
Looks great!
This looks like an edit of Zero with some X from Megaman Xtreme 2. Like straight up.
What you have looks really good. However, it's disengenuos to claim you made it yourself. I won't do a frame by frame, but I can find just about every one of your frames on this Zero sheet. Some have some better edits like where arms/hands are located. But it is still "theft". Though most high end artist friends I have do say that a good artist knows how to steal and get away with it. :) Just be mindful of the legalities.
Overlay them if you like. It's not an edit of Zero. It would take longer to edit that than to draw the frames from scratch.
But MedicineStorm gets to be the judge, it's her site.
I am inclided to believe Emcee when saying these were inspired by Megaman/Zero. That said, the side-by-side (above-below?) comparison that Theforshadower provided definitely rises to the level of "substantial similarity". It strikes me as remarkable that the one is not derived from the other. Legally speaking, in cases where such similarity exists, evidence must be shown that the earlier work was NOT referenced* when producing the later work. Failing that, would/could a "reasonable person" mistake one for the other, or say "Hey is that from Megaman?". I generally think of myself as a reasonable person and indeed I thought exactly that when I first saw this. That doesn't mean Emcee did derive these in actuality, but unless we can gain some additional insight into the process used to create these without referencing* Megaman sprites, I have to leave these flagged for now. Because reasonable people will assume the substantial similarity is due to derivation.
Emcee, any chance you have any WIP work that may shed some light on the process? Something that shows how you arrived that these results without the need for Megaman sprite references?
*Note that when I say "referenced", as I mentioned earlier in this thread, it does not require any literal copy/pasting of pixels nor even overlaying one with the other to provide proportion to be considered a "reference" and therefore derivative. Opening up the Capcom sprites and actively observing them and comparing features while creating the new sprites can still qualify as derivation.
You're quite welcome to all the WIPs I have, although that kind of a negative isn't going to be provable unless I was being filmed for the entire process (and even then, what if I had a photographic memory and could perfectly recall megaman sprites from seeing them once...? I don't, but you only have my word for that). This character is supposed to resemble a megaman character, that's kind of the point of her... And it probably doesn't matter anyway, since I doubt that I'll want to touch this character again now. If anyone really wanted the rest of her animations, it's very likely that within a year or so, a generative AI tool will be able to create them for you!
Looks great!
It's a tremendous shame this has been removed/blocked. IMO the author provided more than adequate evidence that it is an original work.
