Adventure Game-like Backgrounds
I've looked (and maybe not good enough, because the search seems finicky), but cannot seem to find what I need.
So! I'm creating an adventure game, similar to the point-and-click ones like Day of the Tentacle or Monkey Island. While finding backgrounds for things like forests or deserts is easy, my game takes place mostly in a town with a castle.
Additionally, eventually I'd like to make my own backgrounds, but right now, I'd like to just get the basics done. I also believe these assets could be useful for many people other than myself. I'd also like it to be pixel, since my sprites will be pixels, and it's easier to modify the colors or such.
In short:
- Point-and-Click style backgrounds with a medieval/fantasy town setting
- Pixel art style
- Able to be used by anyone after it's finished
Thank you for your time.

Are you saying you'd do the backgrounds...?
I just realized these backgrounds could be used as beat-em-up games or fighting games as well. Most of the backgrounds I've seen don't have room for characters to move, if you know what I mean.
It may help to know what size screen your working at (resolution), this helps to work out pespective and getting proportions right for moving characters.
are you looking for layered backgrounds that scroll@ or more of a fixed 'Scenery setting' like the game broken sword or as you say the awesome monkey island, is that right?

816 x 624 is the size. I'll attach my main character's sprite size for reference.
Fixed scenery. That's correct!

I wouldn't use this one as i dont have a license to it, but i did this effect in sumo paint in about 10 seconds, all that would be left is to colour it in I can make it more or less "Pixel blurred" as well. If you find some open source art you want converted like this just let me know, i dont get a lot of free time so i may not be able to colour it for you though. Of course this isnt "real" pixel art, but it can achieve a similar effect.

What's sumo paint? Maybe I can figure it out, so I don't waste your time. :D
Oh its a free image editing program that works in your browser, it is a good substitute for photoshop. once in the program, All i did to get that effect was go to the adjustments tab at the top, then select hue/saturation, desaturate it to make it grayscale and then go to aadjustments again and posterize it, then you just play with the scales until you achieve the desired effect. You could always apply overlays and things like that for different colours. i find changing it to grayscale first works though because you can get the shading down. here is a link to the site: https://www.sumopaint.com/home/
the program is free to use in browser but you can upgrade if you want it downloaded to your computer(This is what i did, as far as i can tell there is no real benefit except for being able to use it offline.)
you will also need flash to use it if you dont have that installed.
It really doesnt take that long, its just the colouring that will take a little bit of effort.
