Powerful Domain of The Chickenmen: Revival?
Hi again everyone!
So, my pony fangame idea has flubbed again (partly because the movie appended the MLP canon in such a way that I would have to redo my storyline from scratch), and I think it's time for me to start making something else.
I want to make an ancient-era, medieval or fantasy strategy game without any combat, kinda similar to Banished but with 2d retro graphics.
But since I have a track record of falied project after failed project, I want to hear you people about if you think this game idea can even be achieved by a single person in a reasonable amount of time (e.g. not more than a year or two) AND if you have any experience with producing games of this genre or any tips regarding the design. Perhaps you could even redirect me to some OGA assets that would be useful for such a game, and I would be grateful.
I tend to stumble over design and art quality problems the most often, with the programming and sound I usually am able to figure things out. I don't care about the game's popularity or income, but I really do care about having a quality and well thought out concept once in a while.
Hopefully this rambly post makes sense. If not, feel free to ask about anything!
But keep in mind, I'm not trying to recruit people. I'm merely looking for tips on how to plan and structure my own project. Of course if you're happening to be sitting with a similar idea to mine, we could maybe collaborate, but I would wish to do most of the work and in general I was not trying to make a recruitment thread.

I see, yeah that's more like the later Settlers games, mine is more like the first 4 games in the series.
Replaced some of the pixel art with models, although I'm unsure if these guys really look like goblins or more like dino-men

Think I will change the graphics again :P
hiya kir
Hope your project is coming along good?
Your men look like goblins to me :) they cute but for battle scences i think :) a sugestion :)
I like the wood cutter :) and trees :)
the roads look like cobblestone paths :) my game has cobble stone in it too :) settlers must love it :)
i happy i managed to make a generic quest book today, means quest book self updates as one quest done and another quest is given or few quests at a time:) two me 2 days of scratching my head tho.
oh i messed all my colurs up to but did log hue sat and lum so will change back :)

I don't really notice any messed up colors unless your guy isn't meant to be pink of course. Your game looks a lot nicer than mine actually.
So do you auto-generate quests? Seems kinda complicated.
I myself added a working sawmill!
And changed all of the characters into chickens for some reason :P
working on that wood economy.png 350.6 Kb [0 download(s)]
My quest book background colour is ment to be a brown colour not red.
I love your chicken people there cute
My quest book dont create the quests, i still have to add them but the book updates itself when i give a new quest or a quest is completed
Well done on adding the sawmill
My next bit is to work on my credits page tonight after work i think
best regards
Ninja Dog
So your quests should get more and more harder as the game progresses?
Are you going to get multiple people in your town?
Thanks for the compliment btw, I think the chickenmen are quite cute too. And it's something a little bit different I guess.
Added a stone mine
most-recent.png 470.9 Kb [0 download(s)]
yes quests will get harder as you lvl up with exp, multiple people as in npc's yes as these handy as quest givers
mmo i working on that!
I still need to make a battle map think ill try and do that next to give my game some adventure feel:) all reward and exp will be given when battle map completed or ended.
still loving the chicken workers!
Excelent progress on programing, ive just put stone in to my game too :D
best regards
Ninja Dog

Added grain farm, iron mine, schoolhouse
Thanks Ninja Dog - what sort of battle system do you want to use?
screenshot.png 614.1 Kb [0 download(s)]
Also, should I create coal mines, a charcoal burner, or just fire with wood in the blacksmiths I will be adding next?
on the online settlers they have recycling manu-factorys,
Im proberly going for coal mine myself as all i got to do is recolour a mine i already drawn.
For my person that will find the deposits to mine, they are going to be called Earth Scientists instead of geologists.
Wow you are working fast on putting things in your game, very well done. i love your building menu buttons, is it just me or are they different to what is placed on map
Unfortunately i found a bug i need to fix now as it is to do with my interface and quest book, i have a few ideas to rectifi my bug hoping it wont take to long, as i also need to work on some sort of story line as well.
So back to the building menu icons, the 2nd row down 1st one looks great in menu, not so great placed on map becaused it looks to tall
i streched it a bit and think it looks better, and would fill your map out a bit more, wonder what you think ive added pic:)
Ok so to comment on battle system - I am going to be using a turn based system, Which i am going to have to learn to build, may take time lol
all my best regasrds and look forward to feed back on my game too :)

still loving the chicken workers they are great
Ninja Dog
Added charcoal burners, which consume very large amounts of wood and are very slow.
Regarding the buttons - the building picutres are actually stretched both on those and on the map, but the 4th building you were talking about is actually the correct aspect ratio on the map, rather than on the button, where it is squashed so it can fit within it.
I will be happy to provide you with feedback on your game of course. I'm actually kinda curious about it because it seems like an interesting blend of kind of a a JRPG with a settlers style game. Of course I have no idea what your storyline is.

what jrpg mean plz i still unsure of story line too

Your latest revision for the FAQ entry looks good to me.
:)
@NickJons, What "FAQ entry"?
Or are you talking to Ninja Dog?
Added a metal furnace, however the perspective is wrong with this building somehow :P

@ Kir i hope you well not seen you in a couple of days hard at work on game i hope ? :)
Looking forward to seeing your progress, and hope you still kept chicken workers lol

@Nickjons yep i agree situated as well, so my story begins. (starts/ begins) lol
My best regards to all
i may be bad at spelling sorry
Ninja Dog
@Ninja Dog
Yeah I have full intentions of having the chickens be one of the factions in this game! And yeah I'm not doing this exremely intensely every single day, it's not my full time job yknow (tho I spend almost as much time on it as I would on one :P)
What sort of enemies are you going to use? Who's gonna be the villain in Ninja Dog Realm?
Also, like I mentioned to Rainbow Design, it's not even likely that I finish this game at all, it's more something I'm doing for the hell of it, not really to create an interesting product and certainly not a sellable one.
Excellent Progess love it
so many more hud icon buttons and lots added to map
chicken workers rule!
best regards
Ninja Dog
im not sure ill ever finish mine either but it fun to create something playable, and really hope i can i not thought of villians yet as in put into story.
https://opengameart.org/content/10-fantasy-rpg-enemies
i like the ghost and dragon as enemies as i think i may be able to tie a story line in but not sure
think bout me when you need a tester for game plz
Ninja Dog
what does jrpg mean please?
Ninja Dog
Japanese Role-Playing Game. Just the fantasy setting reminds me of it.
I think there will be a while before I need any testers, as I don't have any missions or anyhting yet, just this single map with one player and no goals or enemies.
Added an armoury so you can make guns for your chickens.
There is some sort of bug with it tho where it stops producing after having made just a single gun. :P
screenshot.png 571 Kb [0 download(s)]
One could also add bronze to the game and use that to make cannons, but I figure iron will be just as good.
And that brings up a question, what are you actually going to use gold for in this game?
Maybe I shouldn't even include it, but it's just such an iconic resource that it almost feels wrong not to have it.
for my game gold coins are going to be needed to upgrade buildings and unlock new areas, i hope you fix your bug also i going to have a shop in game to use em up as well,( have things you cant get anywhere but from shop:)
Chickens with guns that so cool :D
Ninja Dog
Are your buildings going to look different when upgraded?
I'm going to have a system where you need a school to educate the chickens to learn better skills which will make their buildings more efficient. But you need to produce paper and ink to run the school, and also have a teacher who has previous experience in the skill she's trying to teach others.
Paper will be produced at a paper mill from wood and water. Ink will be produced by the fisherman (squids!)
yes building will be different as upgraded as i draw them :)
i also having a fishing pond where player can go catch fish :) long way off evan trying to make right now. got other 4 minerials and deposits to put in:)
I like your idea you got a story yet or just building?
chickens with guns love it
my best regards
Ninja Dog
are you going to name the chickens?
Ninja Dog
Eh, probably not, for now they just have numbers, as is the case in real life chicken farming. ^^
Sorry for my late reply, I realize that I might be getting a little lazy with this game, in the latest couple of days I've mainly been working on music and sfx so I haven't got much now to show visually.
Also perhaps this thread is more suitable for SOYP now? It's starting to become more of a project showcase, but I guess we are also discussing features of the game and such.
Show good music if you found some-
Oh, I was thinking of composing it myself, but I might also hire someone, I've been asking around to many different musicians on this site too see what they have to offer.
Im trying to do some music myself right now but i dont manage to get really good songs out of my stuff here. Takes load of training to understand music to create something good :(
Im much better with c# the music engine to mix automatical different tracks of songpieces to random generated music is long finished but the tracks are not. Right now i still only have some oga tracks.
Well it's like with music like so many other things, how "good" you are depends highly on who you compare yourself to, I mean none of my tracks are that great either?
I would like to hear your songs tho. Maybe I can help with some ideas or something.
And while your automated music engine seems like an interesting idea, I highly doubt it will be able to create good or coherent songs, but we'll see :)
Is it somehting like this that you've also coded?
https://pernyblom.github.io/abundant-music/index.html
I personally did not like this or any other automated music generators, the music they make sounds very samey to me, with no real sort of drive or interest to it, if you get what I mean.
But I might just not understand how to use them probably.
I have three problems.
Number one i can make okay music just from letting my mood flow, but i have trouble to make something that could be part of a bigger composition with more than one instrument.
Number two if i manage to make something that might be part of something bigger i have trouble to find instruments that do match and no idea what melody might match either.
Number Three i have trouble to make lukewarm music that can run in the background of a game while barely be noticed.
I made one song some days ago with a friend, i can upload to give a small impression of my problem.
There are two problems with it: One its much too intense for ambient sound. Two it pretty much "finished" i have no idea how to evolve it....
bells.ogg 10.7 Mb [1 download(s)]
I don't know what to say, I think your problems can be fixed, but in order to analyze and explain this I will kinda need to be harsh towards your song, I feel.
And I don't wanna pretend like I know a "right way" which is better than yours. There is no right way to make music after all.
Maybe you should not analyze my song but approach it from a general point of view.
That won't be too easy if I don't know what you know, or how much experience you have, but I could start by asking you what you used to record this, to make sure we're even using the same program. Also I would like to ask you what time signature your song is supposed to be in. And if I get too annoying and smartassy you need to say ^^
That one is made with my friends fl-studio. The time signature is 4 beat per bar / 4 steps per beat. For my experience well i know how to use flstudio and a keyboard :D (No really i dont know how to measure it, i am a programmer not a musician which means i am just experimenting how well i am able to make my own soundtrack.)
I use FL studio as well, so that's good. :)
I have a bit of a hard time figuring out what I want to say here :P I think the song's rhtyhm is confusing, this distracts the listeners attention and makes the song kind of unfit for a calm background theme, but there are so many ways to make different rhythms and I can't say which one you would like or want the best?
I think maybe you should place the notes you want with the mouse instead of recording with a keyboard to start out, this will give you a more visual indication of the time signature, because as you stated yourself, judging from this song it does not seem like you are sure how to measure it. (if you already used the mouse for this I'm sorry, it just doesn't sound like you did)
I guess if you want to, we can build up a song together, sharing the flp or midi files back and forth. I have plenty of time for this today and I think it could be fun. It would be easier over discord though. What do you think about this idea? You don't need to credit me or use this song in your game or anything, it would just be an example project.
