The Fall All-OGA Game Jam! 2018 - Official Discussion Thread
It's official: The Fall All-OGA Game Jam! 2018 starts October 1.
You can start prepping beforehand if you like, full details here:
https://itch.io/jam/fall-all-oga-game-jam-2018
The idea of this Jam is challenge ourselves to use only OGA available assets, so let's see what we can do to show off all the wonderful artwork on OpenGameArt.org!
There is an optional theme:
*** Completing the Set ***
So anyone in need of inspiration can dwell on that, or just start spelunking through OGA works until something strikes a chord!
OK, so I submitted my game now (Garden Warden). It was a lot more work than I expected, to make it, of course. There are quite some technical issues and I haven't tested the latest changes in all browsers... But I would like to greatly thank everybody whose resources made it look or sound gorgeous: Buch, Beast, isaiah658, pixel32, GrumpyDiamond, Master484, mold, asalga, usr_share, surt, Rilifaen, rubberduck, Luke.RUSTLTD !
I hope someone will enjoy my game. Now off to bed!
whoo, only 5 minutes and 32 seconds to spare but I made it!

Looks like a big batch of entries, can't wait to try them all!
Going to try sleeping first though ;)

ps
Everyone please kick me next time I suggest holding a jam that ends on a major holiday.

well i was 5 minutes too late.
i started this yesterday (the first opportunity i had) and almost got a playable thing done, but alas it was not to be.
here is the archive of the build i tried to submit to itch, if anyone's interested. It's not great, but maybe i will develop it further who knows.

Hmm, it's a good looking game, but it's very hard to hit anything since your bullets are very slow...
@MNDV.ecb: Is there an itch.io page for the game? If you really only missed the deadline by 5 mins, I'd consider granting liency and allowing the game into the Jam. That's also if I can find a way to get itch.io to take it.

lol what's up with all the chuck norris references, I'm pretty sure that isn't an OGA asset XD
love the INGSOC reference tho :3
[/quote]
The First rule of Chuck Norris is: you do not talk about Chuck Norris.
Uploaded some of the .PNG files but maybe could be an issue with the copyright for Chuck just being Chuck? Which is understandable.
I also deleted the windows version of my game by accident last night and it won't let me reupload on itch currently. So I just have the HTML 5 version on there now.
Well done everyone who submitted there games and participated in the jam, and a big thanks to @withthelove for hosting the event. :) i will look forward to playing and rating all your games!
Sadly for myself I was unable to submit anything as I ran out of time, and gave myself to much to do, :( I was slaving a way until 4am this morning, but it just wasn't to be.
I am disapointed i was unable to submit as you guys and @withthelove have been so supportive of the jam I ran in the summer and wanted to show my support by participating and submitting to this jam. :( I did participate at least, :) i have left some screen shots of what might of been and will contnue to finish what i intended and upload in a few days time.
Well done everyone!
thank you again @withthelove!

I will be playing your game soon @chasersgaming! Is it a puzzle game?
also, omg I love GNUTON'S LAW, everyone check that out!
@all:
Let me second chasergamings congratulations and thanks to everyone who participated.
Looks like we had a great turn out, super excited to play everything. Just from scanning the itch page, I see a lot of great OGA art on display so kudos to everybody for achieving the Jam's 2nd goal (the first goal being to have fun!) :)
@chasersgaming:
AAAH!!! Those screen shots look so good! I guess we'll have to do that 'finish an old project' Jam next so we can all learn what's up with those elemental stones!
ps
Seeing 'All-OGA Game Jam!' on the bottom of your title reminds me, next time I want to do a small splash screen for the Jam that folks can toss up during their title or studio logo sequences. Be optional of course, but I think it'd be a cool way to tie all the entries together.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
@spring yeah , sort of, was going to have allsorts mixed in with a fairly decent story line i thought, 1 level for each stone but it got to big to fast and well..... unfinished was the outcome :)
@withthelove nice idea about the splash screen! and the 'finish an old project' jam could be a good one for future. :)

@MAG WEB DESIGNS: Love Chuck Norris memes, unfortunately, they are not suitable for OGA. Please see my comment on your game's entry page:

Hey guys! Sorry, I wasn't quite able to submit anything. This wasn't the best month for me to attempt anything, anyways. We had state testing, making halloween costumes (kids always wanna be something you can't just buy), halloween parties among normal life stuff. I only have about 8 hours invested into the game I was working on but couldn't find time to make a HUD and start screen, which is all I really needed to submit something playable.
Anyway, I'll just show what I've got. It's a goofy randomly generated first person shooter, which is something I've never done.
https://youtu.be/vjGLzYubqkc
Later, we'll get junked out on candy and try out the submissions!
@VinnNo.0 : how unfortunate you did not have the time to finish the game. It looks interesting.
If you post a complete or even prototype version later, please tell us.
I think the output of games this time around has been just great!
@VinnNo.0: That reload animation! WOW! it's just so perfectly CUTE! I love it! Another great canidate for the 'Finish Your Old Project' Jam. Starting to sound like we are going to have to hold that one next... :)
@Spring-Enterprises: I agree! Great to see so many new faces too, really cool to hear people say they signed up to OGA or made their first game just for the Jam.
@mnilsson: Without even playing it, I just want to say 'Garden Warden' is an awesome name!
https://withthelove.itch.io/
@withthelove they should've called it OH DEERY... XD
Also, if we make that finish your old game jam, I would like to have a go at Haydenwoffle again tbh, it's nowhere near finished~
@spring thanks for gfx props (that's where all the time went obviously) and yeah the gameplay needs an overhaul... the idea was that you have on-board missiles and you have to match or near the orbital velocity and inclination of your target in order to achieve lock... ech...
@vinnNo.0 that fps looks pretty good from the video... looks like it could be a one-of-a-kind if finished.
gonna start checking these all out today
I have uploaded what would of been my entry to the jam. the state it is in is how i would of submitted it before the deadline passed. so i havent done any extra stuff, just the stuff that i planned to do before the deadline.
expect bugs, collision issues, depths and what ever else for those that want to give it a go. :)

looking forward to playing your games now! :)

I'll play your game now @chasersgaming ^^
Done ! I have finally tested and rated all games !
I am so impatient to see the results. In 9 days...
Well done! I lack playing that homestuck fan game and pumpkin smasher still. So far my favourites are Jirou and Out of Depth.
Gnuton's Law, too!
My favorite games for this jam are : Out of Depth, Fallen Werewolf, JIROU, and Gnuton's Law.
Pompeii is good too!
(and Haydenwoffle, right ? :'D)
completely blatant fishing for compliments here :P
I am so thrilled that people actually like my game at all. It's my first gamejam, and I'm definetly a novice of novices so I went into this thinking i'd fall dead last, but I wanted the experience and the lessons that come with it. So to hear the positive feedback really makes my day. I absolutely adore the style of Haydenwoffle (so did my teenage son). I also like Pompeii and I played Garden Warden for quite a bit. It has a sort of addicitve quality that older style arcade games possess.
@fxchip61 your game is absolutely lovely! certainly the most fun game in the jam for me! It does references in the good way ^^ If it was longer, I would've played it a lot more!
slightly disappointed with haydenwoffle's reception on the other hand. At least you liked it, and that's appreciated a lot!
but I can't belive people found it so confusing..... but I guess minds work differently, I found the cube game horribly confusing,, none of the others tho :)
but that is certainly a lesson learned for next time, eveything needs to be extremely self explanatory.... come to think of it, that's also what Gnuton's Law does really well @fxchip61!
Just a little nudge to everyone at OGA that the Jam voting period is comming to an end. theres about a day and a bit left, i would ask those that participated that havent voted/rated yet to do so, and those that didn't, and have some spare time, to go and check out what some of the members here have made with the assets here at OGA. Im sure they would welcome your comments and ratings.
Thanks. :)

got my ratings in! Had some fun playing these. Hard to pick a favorite, but i most remember Villiagelord. JIROU, Roman Run, and Haydenwoffle were all really strong, as well. Oh yeah, Prototypical DC was fun, too.
got a laugh out of pheonix shooter.
i think it would be cool to work in teams to create more fully formed entries next time around; nevertheless i enjoyed the jam.
@spring i did not find your game confusing in the least
That's great MNDV! I also have a feeling it was getting called out for being confusing just for being a little bit different and not immediately obvious. Glad you gave it a chance though!
(I'll fully admit that there was one game I did not give a proper chance myself, and that was the cube game)
Hello everybody. Congratulations to withthelove, antonioab, exewin and all winers of this jam!
I am last, but with a lot of positive comments on the submission page, just as I planned.
Participating to this jam was an interesting experience (first time I did it), I hope all other programmers enjoyed it as I did.
By the way, now that the jam is finished, I will reveal something : the legend about a secret trick to kill the phoenix is true, there is really a way to kill it, I guarantee that. I don't tell what it is, I will let people search for it ;-)
It was fun, but I gotta say I'm extremely disappointed with how we finished.
I just hoped "Out of Depth" was in the top 4, it deserved better.
I agree with you, it deserved way better.
To me, it seems like the players either were lazy or had no patience :P
I agree, I played it to the end. The controls needed a little work, but it looked a lot nicer then Gnutons Law and had some sweet presentation to it.
@all:
Congrats to every one who participated either by entering or rating the games!
What a great showing for this Jam! 21 entries! Very pleased to see that the 'All-OGA' aspect didn't really seem to scare anyone off.
And a few quibbles aside, everyone did a really good job crediting and citing the OGA art they used!
Thanks to all for taking the effort to do this! It's great to see good crediting habits taking root and also you made my job much easier. I wrote the rules of the jam pretty strict and was worried I'd have to do a lot of un-fun police work to keep things fair but everyone did such a good job with their credits that I hardly had to much at all.
And of course, double congrats to antonioab for J.I.R.O.'s well earned victory! I know I said there'd be no reward for winning but I did manage to toss together this little badge for you to display proudly!
(Leaf texture is from pistachio's amazing 50 Dry Leaf Textures set https://opengameart.org/content/50-dry-leaf-textures)
As for Rescue Roman Run Pompeii! You all are too kind. The game really isn't very ambitious compared to what so many of you pulled off. I was actually planning something much bigger using another one of surt's sets, but real life intervened and I realized I didn't have enough time. It wasn't all bad though. Part of what kept me away from the keyboard was that my oldest son was home sick for the entire first week of October. But in a nice twist, between trips to the toliet, bowls of chicken noodle soup, and lots of reading out loud to help him sleep, the two of us managed to play a few rounds of a board game called Pompeii (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/13004/downfall-pompeii) which in turn gave me the inspiration for Rescue Roman Run Pompeii! So I guess it worked out ok in the end.
Finally, I take full responsibility for 'Out of Depth's ranking. That was definitely one that empasized story heavily and I am the dunce that left the 'Story' category out of the ratings. Hope I can be forgiven and that everyone knows it was an honest mistake.

Well done everyone!, I really enjoyed the games.
Congratulations to everyone for taking part, and to the top 3.
A massive thank you to @Withthelove for taking the time to create and host a very sucessful game jam. and to exclude your own game from the rankings is very noble of you. you deserve a big pat on the back for all your efforts.
sorry to hear your boy was not well, hope he has recovered.
look forward to you running the jam again!. :)

J.I.R.O.U. is very good! Congrats to the winner!
Oh yes, to be clear, it is definitely my intent to exclude my entry and recognize J.I.R.O. as the official Game of the Jam!
It doesn't seem right to win your own jam, especially when you botched the rating categories (in your own favor no less). Besides which J.I.R.O. and RRRP both tied for #1 in the overall category so it is perfectly correct to say JIRO won '#1 Best Overall' no matter how you slice it.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
@withthelove perhaps a good choice, though both J.I.R.O.U. and Pompeii are pretty much equally good in my opinion (of course Pompeii used my music so in that sense I'd have liked to see it win XD)
I would like to voice my support for a finish your old game jam. I've been meaning to join an OGA jam for a while. I came up with an idea for the Summer 2017 jam but couldn't find an rpg engine to implement my vision. I almost tried this one as well. I did enter the Indie Game Making 2018 contest with that original idea I had. Alas building a new rpg engine in one month didn't work. I still want to complete the OpenGameArt Movie Video Game so a game jam focused on completing old projects would be nice. I've been adding the 1 bit color art for the game to this site.
@dulsi: I'll second that! The only concern I have is how to properly vet the entries for a 'finish an old project' jam. I guess we'd mostly just have to go on the honor system. I mean it certainly wouldn't be a problem if someone submitted an new project (eg. not really something old) but I noticed that even for the Fall-All-OGA jam, we got a few entries that had to be rejected because they were clearly just existing games that were submitted to the Jam. I guess we could just say 'must not have been publicly released before the jam'. Although to be honest, I wouldn't mind if someone took an old released but half-completed project and finished it up for the Jam. Something like Spring's entry for the Fall-All OGA Jam would be a fine canidate for the 'Finish It!' jam. So I guess the trick is to word the rules so that old incomplete projects are ok, but otherwise previously released stuff is not.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
"Released" includes released in a previous game jam?
--Medicine Storm
@MedicineStorm: Yeah, that's what I'd think. I guess my concern is the game that was submitted to another Jam in an incomplete or unfinished state.
Although, maybe the the idea is only something that you've worked on but haven't ever released. Name could be 'The OGA Finish It! Jam!' and the (optional) theme would be 'The Light of Day' since the idea is to finish old projects, taking them out of the dust bin and into the light of day.
I dunno, I am torn. The general idea is 'go back and finally finish an old project'. The question is do we include projects that might have been released already? I don't really have a problem with that as long as the previous releases were obviously half finished. What I'd want to avoid is getting into an argument with someone who takes an already complete game adds some new feature or bug fix or some otherwise minor change and then tries to crash the jam claiming it's an old project they have just 'finished'.
For concrete examples, if Spring wants to go back and finish Haydenwaffle, that would seem like a fair entry into a 'Finish an old project' jam.
By contrast, I have a few changes I'd like to make to Rescue Roman Run Pompeii! I am actually working on them now as a matter of fact. Stuff like adding a few more levels, polishing up the level editor so it can be included with the game, tweaking the controls a bit (esp. around ladder climbing), etc. I could argue that this represents 'Finishing an old project', but I wouldn't and I wouldn't want to accept efforts like that into the jam.
So I guess I'd be looking for a way to word the rules that allowed the first case and not the second.
