So would the site only show 2 art submissions before the fold?
Nope, it's just a screenshot, but you could scroll down and see more artwork
"before the fold" = "without scrolling down"
so, in this concept- as depicted by your screenshot above- of a new OpenGameArt layout, the theoretical site would only display 2 art submission previews without the user needing to scroll down?
Yep, you would have to scroll down but of course it can be changed. I just think we should emphasis artworks and make the image biggers

Personally I would go for more than 2 assets on the front, but I have to admit it's a good look. I like the color scheme too.
Personally I prefer the current look. I think websites should focus on being functional over being pretty, but it's pretty cool that you're giving a retooling a shot.
I think it looks great samuncle, your version is much more mobile-friendly.
I like the idea of putting search and the latest news/blog entry right up front.
I agree, the large previews are great but limting the number 'before the fold' is not so hot. Although, I think going that route on mobile would be perfectly fine.
