Looking for some art to finish my sci-fi RPG
Ascension 2 Galaxy has been my main project for the past year and a half. It's a science fiction RPG built in RPG Maker with a mix of standard, free, and custom assets. It's a sequel of sorts to my text RPG, but really only in the sense that it shares the universe and a few character. You step back into the shoes of Lieutenant Allison Hunt, this time assigned to track down the terrorists who have hijacked a prototype missile cruiser.
At this point, I'd put the gameplay at 90% complete. What the game really needs is testing, balancing, and a lot of polish. There's a thread on OpenGameArt, though it's not well updated, and you can download an open beta here.
I've relied heavily on assets from here and elsewhere, and I've tried to make my own for various parts, but I've hit a bit of a wall where I need new assets and my own skills just aren't good enough. I've been trying to avoid RPG Maker assets both because of non-free licensing and because it makes the game look too much like every other RPG Maker game, but in many cases this has resulted in a bad case of programmer art.
Some of the art in the game I know needs to be redone from scratch and some of it can maybe be polished up. Some things are higher priority than others- if you disagree, feel free to bring it up. Even if you can't contribute any art, feedback is much appreciated.
Critical. Either there is no art or it's absolutely horrible and I very badly need something to replace it.
- A portrait for the main character, Allison Hunt. Right now, she's the only main character without a face.
- A cleaned up or replacement portrait for the Panalians. I tried to draw this myself.
- A new world sprite for the AAV Crimea. I can handle very small pixel art okay, so I made a sprite for cutscenes, then I scaled it up as a world sprite and it looks even worse than I expected.
Desired. I'd like this cleaned up or replaced, but the show can go on without it.
- New corpses. A dead version of a specific character and a few generic smashed bodies. Kind of gruesome, but important at some points. The current sprites are pretty bad.
- Cleaned up or all-new portraits for the companions/main characters. The current ones are some of the first I've done, and they're pretty bad cut and paste jobs. As silly as it sounds, I feel the characters deserve to look better.
- Improved battler sprites. I took the world sprites and scaled them up. It doesn't necessarily look bad, but it feels like kind of a cheat.
Nice to have. Most of this is a matter of replacing non-free with free or trying to distinguish the game more. I don't expect any of this to happen.
- New overworld sprites for all characters who aren't silhouettes, or at least the main characters.
- Replacement tilesets with libre licensing and a more distinct look.
- New attack animations. To be honest, there are plenty out there and I could probably replace the RPG Maker ones with some off this site.
- A new title screen. This used to be much higher priority, but I've grown to like the current "Galaxy" backdrop, which was originally supposed to be temporary.
- Voice work for the opening cutscene.
If anyone is interested at all, I will provide more details, such as technical requirements and lengthier descriptions.
Perhaps it's a bit optimistic of me, but I'm hoping that someone is willing to step in and provide some of this art for my project. I've considered commissioning, but I don't really have the money, and I no longer have any plans to go commercial with this game so I won't make any back. With that being said, I'm willing to negotiate, you just probably won't be happy with my offer.
I am more than willing to share. If you can contribute art licensed CC-BY or OGA-BY and release it for others to use as well, that's perfect for me. Even if you do not have any intention of pitching in, I encourage you to try the game and leave feedback in the other thread.
