OGA Game Jam#2
Hi everyone, sorry if i got you excited about another jam, its not happening yet, i just want to know what everybodys thoughts are on running a 'theme' this year?
Im going to make a few changes this time round after reading all the feedback, duration, rules etc, and one of the things that im not sure about is running a theme. obvouisly most jams had one, and the last jam i kinda incorporated some sort of theme by including the art challenges as an optional theme (at the time i felt that having a theme may isolate some assets being used) , but maybe you guys and girls would actually want a theme set for the jam. so nows your chance to say, yes or keep it as it was like last year. how would you want to select a theme? should this be something you want.
Jam now ready for participants!
No opinion on theme, but I did think rewarding the use of OGA assets was a great feature. I might be biased there, though. :)
--Medicine Storm
I think it was pretty much perfect last time (might be biased too lol) but I think there should at least be one obligatory set theme.
-https://red-voxel.itch.io/arrows-of-love #1 in the OpenGameArt Summer 2017 Game Jam-
@medicinestorm, yes i agree, think its essential really as its about using the great assets as much as possible that are offered by so many here, we want to see them being used, and the incentive of gaining extra rating votes based on those assets is hopefully enough to see the jammers using the assets. :)
@redvoxel thanks, i do wonder about themes though, i suppose its a traditional thing really for game jams to have a theme, it does generate an excitement around it, but then ive seen so many devs pull out of game jams because of the theme elected, and i still feel that having a theme may isolate particular assets, or maybe drive devs to a particular genre of game, i.e we get a lot more platformers because the assets that are based on the theme are platformer plentiful. :) as you say "i think it was pretty much perfect last time" so if it isnt broken dont try to fix it, and just keep it the same with the 'art challenge' assets being a 'optional' theme, but maybe we could have a vote on the 'art challenge' themes and have only one as a obligatory theme for the jam?
just thinking.... thanks for your responses, lets see if we get anymore. :)

@chasersgaming what the theme is will definitely be a major factor in regards to whether I will feel a desire to participate ^^ you could have maybe 3 different themes and try to make those as different as possible.
@Spring, yeah, that just highlights my point about having one theme. last years jam had 6 themes to choose from based on the art challenges, which were totally optional for the dev to consider when participating. think i will stick with this plan, but its good to hear peoples thoughts on it. thanks. :)

@chasersgaming I think your plan sounds great, with more themes I hope we may get a more diverse selection of result games.
Not that last year wasn't diverse or anyhting
I'm curious. Which would have a better chance of attracting your participation? A jam with a very broad theme like "the theme is OGA art. Use OGA resources in your game" or a narrow theme that specifically appeals to you?
--Medicine Storm
@MedicineStorm are you asking me?
If so, I greatly prefer using my own resources over some made by others regardless of mine being possibly inferior in quality.
But it's not too certain I will participate regardless, because I haven't been able to conjure up a decent game idea in a long time :'P
I was musing in general, but also asking you specifically, yes. I'm wondering which is better, a broad theme or a narrow theme that may be more interesting.
Regarding using your own resources, nothing about the theme "use some resources from OGA" would prevent you from doing that. :) Your resources are on OGA.
--Medicine Storm
I think "use resources from OGA" is a little bit unfocused for a theme imo. On the other hand, with a very narrow theme there will likely be fewer participants and probably also a greater chance of the games becoming samey.
The theme isn't that important, and not all assets have to be from OGA, it's only a mimuim requirement to use them and to encourage their usage, especially the art challenges, so you can use your own resources aswel if you want to. Ultimately it's really about the assets here at OGA that I want to take centre stage, but at the same time strike a good balance where those that want to participate have options to choose how they participate and not be put off by anything. You could create assets during the jam that arn't here yet, as long as you submit them here before the jam ends then that will work as well.:) options are always good I think. :)

If you wanted to do a theme, I would suggest making it one that dove-tailed with the general concept of using OGA assets. "Sharing is Caring" or "The Magesty of the Commons" or something like that.
The nice part of a theme is it provides a creative springboard to help get people going. Someone once told me the hardest part of making games is starting with a blank page. Once you pencil a few things in, everything begins to flow from there, but when you start out and you're just staring at that blank page that's the toughest part. Having a theme to work around can definitely help with this and might help encourage submissions.
On the other hand, as already stated by others, it does narrow the possibilities somewhat and could discourage entries that way. TBH, I don't know what theme my entry in last year's jam could possibly have fit into.
@Spring: Although, I also tend to stick with my own assets (mostly because I am (somewhat irrationally) terrified of encountering licensing issues), I will say that using other people's stuff was actually part of the fun for me in last year's OGA Game Jam. It gave me a chance to work with some great art (way better than my own stuff ;) and it was fun to challenge myself and see what I could do without insisting on creating everything myself for a change. Well just my 2 cents for you ;)
It seems themes can be a fickle thing. :) some want it, need it, some don't want ,not nothered by it. I suppose the way it worked last year was OK, I more than happy to do it that way again. I'm even happy for those to use a theme from a different jam altogher. I.e ludam dare as an example. I personally couldn't make a game in 48-72 hours but the themes are interesting, so why not make your game based on another jams theme,we could still rate it on those and still benefit from the OGA assets being use for it like we would are own selected themes. Just a thought.
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
Just as long as you don't make the time limit as restrictive as Ludum Dare :P
@capbros If I am going to use other peoples' stuff in the jam, I'm likely going to need to edit it anyway in order to make it all fit within a coherent package, and as such I am more comfortable working with my own stuff after all.
I could of course make a game where, intentionally nothing is coherent, that just seems kind of kliché imo.
Let's do a 7MRL!
You have to create a fully functional Rogue-like game in 7 minutes or less!
--Medicine Storm
Another one of those MedicineStorm jokes I suppose...
@Spring the jam will run for 4 weeks( July 1st to July 29th) So there is time to create or edit assets. I will also announce the start of the jam 2 weeks before it starts so people can start planning/creating there assets then too. :)
Infact theres nothing stopping you all sorting out assets now if you want, but no coding until the jam officially starts. :)

JULY?!?
That's so long! I was hoping it was gonna be in May or something!
Yeah, I know, sorry. July suits me best at the moment, but it could change next year. Who knows. :)
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
Aww, that's such a long time to wait....
Hi, quick update on things as we are edging closer to the jam start date.(1st July)
ive looked through the comments of the feedback received from last year and this thread and this is what is likely to happen.
* last year voting/rating was closed to those that only participated in the jam. This year it will be open for anyone to rate/vote
* the jam will still run for 4 weeks.july 1st - 29th
* themes will be optional again, based from the art challenges.
* last years mimuim requirement was 6 assets, 2 from each categorie. This year the mimuim will still be 6 assets, but they can now be from any category, or all from one category.
* as this is now open for voting/rating to all, it was suggested that it would be good to have a OGA favourite, so il introduce it this year for this jam. So you will have a winner based on the voting results and now an OGA favoriuite voted by just the OGA community aswell. Which will work by private messaging me your vote.
other than those changes, it will be pretty much the same rule wise, but il write those up ssoon, any questions for now then please comment here.
no prizes I'm afraid, just the fun of participating, I'm sure medicinestorm will sort some medals out. Maybe next year il put some money aside to actually have some prizes, but we're see then.
:)

Will the jam still be hosted on itch.io?
-https://red-voxel.itch.io/arrows-of-love #1 in the OpenGameArt Summer 2017 Game Jam-
@redvoxel yes, unless another site is preferred by others. But no one has suggested one, so I was going to stick with itch.io.:)
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
I'd definitely vote for using itch.io again, I thought their system worked really well last year.
All the rule changes sound good!
Really looking forward to this! Got a few ideas percolating in my head, can't wait to get started on them. :)
Ahh, I've got no ideas...
I haven't got any ideas myself, sadly I may not actually participate unfortunately, bummer. :( but hopefully I can submit something. I know this is a game jam, but you can do something like an visual novel, interactive book type thing instead or whatever you think would be good if games are not your thing, long as it can be downloaded on itch for rating. Sometimes it's hard to get ideas, try looking through the assets here, you may find something that sparks the imagination.:)
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
Games are my thing, it's just my ideas are never coherent or enduring for more than 5 minutes of play. Every game I make turns into a mess...
@spring, sorry I didn't mean for that to sound like I was just talking to you, I was actually speaking out loud, I know games are your thing.:) mine end up in a mess too, NADD was a disaster and I been developing my game for the last 4 years, started it again twice. All a learning curve. Patience and perseverance. I have learnt more about myself in the last 4 years learning game development then I have game developing.:) you can always take a positive from something you think is a mess, in fact it probably isn't a mess, maybe your just being to critical of yourself, this can hinder ideas aswell I think. :)
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
What is NADD?
And I have to be critical, because my testers are really amateurish and are not critical enough XD
I see, well don't be to critical where it can effect your development ideas.:)
NADD = Never a Doll Day.

@Spring & Chasersgaming: Don't go too hard on yourselves! I started making games when I was 11 and I can tell you it took at least 8 years before I made anything that was even remotely good. There's so much that goes into making a game, it takes a long time to get a handle on all the pieces and even then I'd say it's never something you really master. Even the industry greats all have at least one or two turds* under their belt. As Chasersgaming says, the important thing is to learn what you can from the messes and keep trying.
ps
If you need help testing something, feel free to PM me, happy to lend a hand.
* I don't condone potty talk, but 'turd' is absolutely an official industry term. :)
@capbros your quite right, and thanks for the offer of testing, I believe you tested my "Monstropolis" game, and your feedback was great, was and is still appreciated. Thankfully the word 'turd' hasn't been referred to it yet, but it doesn't matter if it does. It will be my 'turd'! If I do happen to make a game for the jam, I'm going to call it 'turd' because it just sounds so funny as S.... ., have you played with 'turd' yet? Hahahaha ;) will you test my turd?

I sorry, I've lowered the tone here. I'm so tired.
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
You guys make me laugh. :D
--Medicine Storm
@capbros It's easy to get hard on yourself because of the ridiculous expectations gamers have nowadays.
ive written up the OGA favourite part. i included the 60 nday account bit as i didnt want people creating multiple accounts just for the vote. is 60 days reasonable or not?
OGA Favourite (new)
As well as your games being rated here to declare a winner, this year I have introduced the 'OGA Favourite' vote. This means that the OGA community members can vote on their personal favourite game of the jam. So if you don't win the jam itself, you could win this instead. Or you never know, you could do the double and win both! ( votes cast by private messaging me on OGA website, 1 vote per member, and only members that have had an account longer than 60 days will count)
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
how about "only approved accounts"? Accounts with no community participation are never approved.
--Medicine Storm
yeah OK, how will i know that from a private message though?
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
oh so you mean you have to approve them before they can post and stuff? i dont remember waiting to be approved?
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
No, everyone can post, approved or not. but some things are restricted on unapproved accounts, like links to external sites. Let me check if PMs still work for unapproved accounts. If not, isn't that exactly what we want?
I'm glad you didn't notice having to wait. It means I'm approving accounts quickly enough. :)
This is a picture of my profile page; unapproved

@Chasergaming: I'd say we definitely don't want to restrict voting based on how long an account has been around. That would block out people who just learned about OGA from the Jam! :(
I wouldn't worry too much about people creating accounts just to vote unless you think that might have been a problem last year. Like so much OGA-related, instead of trying to legislate that problem out in advance, I'd leave it as 'mitigated at Administrator's discretion if/when problem arises'
ps
Trust me Monstropolis was definitely not a turd, that name alone is GOLD! :)
@Spring: I guess the flip side of that is if people have high expectations it's because there are so many great games out there for them to play! The plus side for us as developers is that also means there are lots of examples to learn from. :)
Good point, capbros. It's actually pretty obvious from my perspective when duplicate accounts are created, so I don't even think it's going to be an issue.
--Medicine Storm
@capbros, your right i get what your saying, i dont want to turn people away from OGA at all, but at the same time, people could create multiple accounts to vote, and i could have an inbox of crazyness, also Medicinestorm wont want to be bogged down approving accounts all day. it could be a disaster so i thought having a filter for now would be good, and then change it next year perhaps if all goes well. But its cool if not, il happily leave it as just a private messgae for everyone. and work around that next year if needed.
capbros +1 for no account filter.
@Medicinestorm ?
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
Sounds good to me. A few hundred accounts from this won't even slow me down. Seriously, I'll be able to remove illegitimate duplicates before they can even send you the PM :)
P.S. I'm sure some of you punks out there will take this as a challenge. I'm sure you'll be able to game the system if you put your mind to it, but please don't.
--Medicine Storm
OK, I shall edit out the 60 day account bit. Thank you @capbros @medicinestorm. :)
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
Maybe itch.io has some way of sorting/grouping accounts that could be used to handle this?
@capbros I'm not sure it does, even if it did I wouldn't have a clue how to do it.:)
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
Monstropolis was quite fun!
@capbros the name "Monstropolis" was used in both "Mega Man" and "Monsters Inc." before, but you probably know.
