Game Project Name : Ninja Dog Realm
Hiya i am very new to game making been teaching myself how to script my game over the last 2 years, last 5 months every day i been doing a bit. So still very much a hobby for me and still love the challenge it is providing.
My trouble at the moment:
is art work that is 64 pix x 64 pix that i can use in my game. especialy buildings.
Items i can do fine as i can draw them within the 64 x 64 px and scale the display within my game making engine.
Im a massive fan of The Settlers Online been playing since it started. I have always wanted to build a game. So Im building an rpg type version.
Things I need are like Houses, wood cutter hut, water well, farm building etc ( would love 64 x 64 pics as my game includes tile switching in script
if anyone can help on where to get such art, or can draw some i would be so grateful.
I like this style of graphic, but would need the buidings without the ground art.
i agree i not decided between iso and top down, rings could be health and magic bars :)
Ninja Dog
I think you will have trouble finding a consistent art style until you make that decision?
What is your game actually about? Seems like a strategy RPG to me but I may be wrong.
strat rpg is correct, influenced by the settlers online game :) just not sure how i gunna make it all work :)
ive drawn alot of art id like to improve and use, also tons great stuff on here (OGA), and a great community too!
best regards
Ninja Dog

Strange color for iron XD
please suggest different colour :D
Ninja Dog
Well the typical color you'd use in a game like this is dark gray, but it could also be a rusty red.
I think this is going to be a great game,
can't wait to see where it goes!
I been thinking if anyone has any spare time if they would be so kind and draw me a ninja character? for my game.
I have the template or scale size i need it will be attached.
i trying to focus on pixel art style.
Im not sure on licence law on image attached but it comes free with 001, so just use as a inspiration:)
my best regards

What do you use marble and copper for? Should you be able to craft manually or would you need to construct buildings?
marble is to build buildings and copper is for weapons.
you mine both products
:)
to build you will need other resources too :)

A really nice project! Is it not playable?
I'm not a great artist... haven't even have any here... but I would like to try. I'll try to make something... any suggestions to what I could make first?
thankyou for such a nice comment ,unfortunately no not playable at moment! :( hope to have something out by feb 2018
Im working on the core mechanics mainly interfaces as well as graphics.
Ive got a bug i need to fix :(
What sort of art are you thinking of drawing, I have gone for pixel art for my game. evan tho seems simple it is quite hard to get it to look good, im still learning as well.
If you after something to draw i still need to draw a wood cutter building maybe try that? who knows given your permission I may use in my game and of course put you in my credits :)
Looking forward to seeing your art,
best regards
Ninja Dog
I'm really confused if the game is top-down or isometric.
it is both enviroment is more top down and buildings are isometric, its just ended up that way :)
Ninja Dog
Okay. I'll try to draw an isometric woodcutter building.
ok i think i have now sorted my bug so that is great, interface close button no long conflicts withs quest list:)
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with :)
Ninja Dog
Okay... my first try and it doesn't really work. The structure I created might too complex for a 64X64 tile. I'll make a simpler one. Just one cabin and a stump with an ax on it.
Here is my unfinised work. Any suggestions is welcome!
woodcutter_1.png 1.1 Kb [0 download(s)]
yep as you suggested yourself, I think 1 building maybe that would fill the top half of the tile, Maybe L shape then some logs and a stump with axe in.
here is the log and stump i already have put into my games art section, the relevant people already in my game credits.

the log and stump is by stephen challener :)

@RalmonM
That's a nice woodcutter! Wish my game had an art style like that, it reminds me of the Apple II!
Hi Ninja Dog! Is the size of the structures arbitrary? I thought it was 64x64 but the log and stump would have occupied the whole tile alone. Also, those structures you created aren't 64x64. Or maybe, the structures can occupy more than one tile? Maybe 128x128 or four tiles?
Oh! Here is another one. It is finished I guess? Maybe it needs some adjustment, or it doesn't actually fit the game you are making. I tried to imitate the style of the graphic you posted and I hoped I get it right.

i like the hut and axe looks very nice :)
i attached a screen shot with highlight of where wood cutter would go :)
128 good

I just have to fit it in the box?
hiya, yes it dont have to be a normal size i can work with different odd sizes, i think a wood cutter to fill that bit of my map would be good

sorry recording is not great and yes i got bugs lol more of them:)
feel like i progressing with programing side a bit, putting bugs aside as i know i can fix with varibles just not added them yet.
oh and altered stuff art wise to.
my best regards
Ninja Dog
The framerate seems very low, or is it just the recording?
@RalmonM I really like your buildings!
i think it the recording
Ninja Dog
It should be pretty obvious for you to tell if you know what your game's framerate is.
Sadly you don't show too much gameplay :P
Can the Earth Scientist find any sort of mineral deposit you want? Could be interesting to get efficiency chains set up near the mountains you decide.
the game plays and runs fine i can have things happen as quick as .1 of a second
the earth scientist will be able to find different types of deposits, stone marble copper iron coal, granite each one unlocked as you lvl up. and multiple deposits can be found.
Well thats the plan with him, oh after finding deposit, a mine must be built in order to extract the minerals in it. after you have mined the minerials out of the deposit it dissapears and you have to search and build again
To mine stone it is going to be free, then other mines will cost eg a copper mine will cost 10 stone to build.
thats my plan just need to make it all work.
I will add permanent builds as well for mineral processing plants, weapon productions etc
and will add battle maps
Alot of work to do :D
Ninja Dog
today i worked on my earth scientist finding deposits
I managed to put on my map today 2 Stone deposits that have too be found by LD47th, one of which you can build a stone mine on. It mines stone for you!
Put in options for marble copper and iron but they not working just yet
Will make other deposit build-able tomorrow
if you try and search for deposits that you have found max number, it tells you all deposits of that type have been found:)
I found stone mined at rate of 1 every 3 seconds, deposit holds 800. i feel it a good flow for game/minerals being extracted.
I starting to think about EXP too now to lvl character up
Oh messed around with hud a bit, I think this is possibly best basic layout i have done yet? to suit my game.
What you think?
I still need to introduce my story too of which i have bout 3 lines lol,
best regards

Yeah this new UI does look a lot better, execpt the word "Quests" seems to be covered up by the blue border.
The mine is cute! But it seems very small? Maybe gnomes are vorking there XD
What do you need to do to gain XP?
Complete quests?
yes so does storage word sorry not removed yet just tucked em out of the way :) not decided if i actually need them.
i agree they small but they will get bigger as i progress in my art, all my mines look like that just recoloured it for different minerals will make better as i progress in making the game work.
yes will be completing quests to begin with then also from doing battle maps fir XP
have you thought of enemies yet?
What type of battle system you having?
Ill be working on more map area and marble deposits next.
I think my player shop will contain endless mines for minerals something to spend gc and rare items on :)
I have no thoughts of introducing magic to game, well maybe just one or 2 spells (if i can make them work)
best regards
Ninja Dog
Yeah my enemies are probably gonna be AI players controlling another city. I will have maybe 3 different factions similar to command and conquer, but I will start with making this first one. Maybe split screen multiplayer with 2 mice will be added sometime far into the future.
You can see how all of my buildingds are red, they will be recolored to different colors for the other players. My battles will take place on the map itself in real time, the chickens will be able to produce 5 different units,
Cannoneers,
Grenadiers,
Musketeers,
Halberdiers,
and Captains.
Each of them will serve their own purpose which would take kind of a long time to explain. Basically, the cannoneers will act similar to mortars or artillery in company of heroes 1, with long range and damage but no close combat defense, and also taking a long time to move and turn around, your typical artillery unit. Maybe you will be able to load them with different kinds of shot. It takes 6 iron, 8 coal, 4 wood, and 8 gunpower to build a cannon. (I haven't implemented gunpowder production yet)
Grenadiers are mainly used to attack infantry in cover, or attack from behind cover themselves, because they can throw their grenades over objects. Making grenades requires 1 iron, 2 coal, and 4 gunpowder.
Musketeers have a long range, but low precision and a long loading time, however making muskets are cheaper than making cannons and grenades, they also have more HP. Making a musket requires 1 iron, 2 coal, 2 wood, and 1 gunpowder.
Halberdiers have the most HP and defense, but can only fight in melee and are very slow. They are the tankers or meat shield. They are also the cheapest kind of soldier, since they don't require gunpowder to build (but more iron for their armor) It takes 2 iron and 2 wood to make a halberd.
Finally captains are mainly used to train the other units. Maybe they should require gold to build?
(all the price numbers are temporary)
I have no idea if I'm going to add different levels of soldiers, or have them gain experience by fighting.
I think I will make gunpowder production next, now that I'm talking about it.
But I don't really know what would be a good way to implement gunpowder production, I mean to make gunpowder requires nitrate, which was historically made from animal manure. But I don't know if that should be in the game.
sounding good, in the settlers online gunpowder is made in a powderhut from salt petre
Ninja Dog
Okay. Second try. The style of the given graphic doesn't really match well with the game's artwork so I sort of combine the two. I also reference the color palette of the log and stump. I also go for a log cabin style for the cabin.
