So far my favorite tileset - not overly small, look awesome, big variety of tiles, includes also other game elements and is under CC0 - I can't see how this could get any better.
I am currently trying to upscale some of these sprites. I start with scaling it with pixelart specialized algorithms, such as XBR or HQ2X, and then manually polish them. Looks good so far. I'll share the results back under CC0 as soon as I'm finished :)
so probably pick something else if you want to do it too, in order to not duplicate our efforts. There is a huge list of source sites on the PublicDomainReview site, so pick one and search for interesting stuff :) Don't forget to double check the work is indeed in the public domain - plus the rights to the digital copy have to also be available (watch out for this one!).
Definitely Godot! It's free and open-source (FOSS) and there's a great community (check out the FB group). Also check out SweetHome3D (FOSS interior/exterior design program, you can export the model), Blender (FOSS 3D program, includes a game engine) and FreeCAD (FOOS CAD program, good for creating machines, guns etc.).
