Boing, it's possible. I don't know if HTML5's canvas can keep up with the framerate needed for an action RPG though. I'm definitely watching how HTML5 games come along to see if it's possible.
Looks like monday crept up on everyone. I think that seeing Recent Submissions on the front page related to the weekly challenge usually helps people remember.
Voting should be easy... and, done. Congrats Robin!
Redshrike, I'd like to add support for flexible inventory menus, where the user can define how many equipment slots and inventory slots are used. (same with the Powers menu, I'd like to make that all user-defined). I'm not there yet. That level of customization will probably come later. I'll get this one, simple core game style working first.
ThePrinny: thanks for the feedback! I agree, if I can capture half the magic that was Diablo 1 then I'll be very happy.
So far implementing fog/shadows is tricky in SDL 1.2. I'll probably have to use an SDL addon that supports blitting surfaces at various darknesses. It's something I definitely would love to do.
It will definitely evolve past hack & slash! Right now there's so much core engine work left to do that I'm staying busy though.
I completely agree with your example about a temple tileset. I really want to dive in and make those kinds of things, but I'm going to wait until most of the engine is done before switching into full tileset mode.
DeviantArt allows browsing both by Popularity and by Newest. I think Popularity is the default, giving the impression that there is mostly high quality work on DeviantArt. Of course, the vast amounts of mediocre art can be seen when browsing by Newest.
OGA, like DeviantArt and every other place with user-submitted content, follows the rule that 90% of everything is crap. I wonder if people get the impression that OpenGameArt has poor quality art because by default we show everything submitted.
Our "Featured" section kinda works to display very popular items, but maybe we can automate that section e.g. items with a certain number of Favorites automatically get added. Then we can consider moving the Featured section higher on the page.
I'm not saying I don't want poor quality art on OpenGameArt. In fact, what's poor quality to one person can be inspirational and perfect to another. I think we should just display our best stuff more prominently.
This would require input from the Art Director or Lead Artist on an open source game project. If you are such a person, please post details in this thread!
Example: one day I might do an OSARE challenge. To help with this I'd post a default Blender scene for OSARE (with proper light, camera, etc. settings). I'd link to existing concept art and music. I'd make a short wish-list of things I could really use.
Game Trope Challenge
Take a very specific game trope and let OGA artists attack it, so that we cover some basic needs in various styles. This could come in various forms.
When we get this specific it's tricky; we might leave out music composers, for example.
Specific Media Challenge
Maybe some weeks we can target specific media; this might make some specialists happy. Also, other artists can either take a break or try something new.
Somehow make a challenge that requires people to work in groups.
Some ways to do this:
- Art in Pairs. We split into groups of two (either randomly, or people pick who they'd like to work with). Each pair discusses what kind of art they both want to make.
- Many Artists, One Entry. This might work for something like a tileset. We post the specs, and everyone contributes to the same piece of art.
Bizarro Challenge
Submissions must be in a media or style you normally never work with. E.g. I can try to compose music, or do jrpg-style pixel art.

Tried Frogatto for the first time; I'm a sucker for well-made platformers. Well done!
The engine sounds impressive. I'll definitely have to take a look. Sounds like I can learn alot about engine design from it.
A lot of guys ignore the laugh and that’s about standards.
Only two entries this week (the hand cart is an older submission)

Some ideas I'm kicking around:

NPCs: "Burly Blacksmith", "Space Mercenary", "Adventurer Princess"
Settings: "Seedy Tavern", "Interrogation Room", "Alien Base"

Specific Media Challenge
